Wikimania Sweden was Thursday 14 – Sunday 18 August 2019.
I often type to take notes. Some notes are more organized and some are less so. I frequently take notes about the ideas which people and communities have. I wish that I could communicate more, as of course if I see the notes, then I understand the social context, but when I put down words, I am not being entirely effective in communicating to people who are outside this community and time.
For reporting Wikimania 2019 I am mostly sharing my notes by day. I take notes for myself and as I see them, I have awareness of what parts will age and travel well and which parts are nuance which insiders could understand here and now. What I regret about my writing is that my publication is for the future. It happens that I sort my own thoughts with notes, so I like my own documentation, but there is a longer lasting value in me sharing these notes with the future, but I know that they will be challenging or impossible to appreciate then. If I had time and resources then I would format my notes to be more accessible, but I have other obligations which right now seem more urgent, so I will share what I can as I am able.
When I drop names I do not intend to communicate that I know someone’s mind, but only that I talked to them and heard what I wanted them to say. If I report that someone raised an issue, then I should be accurate in reporting their interest in the subject. If I report that someone took a strict position on a complicated issue, then I might be incorrect or projecting my wishes. I try to type as I understand what I hear.
I am pre-dating this post well after the conference. I take notes during events and often published after.
