I went with some Wikipedians to see The Machine on Thursday 12 September 2013. This was a telling of Deep Blue versus Garry Kasparov, which was a story I already enjoyed.
In the play the chess matches were actually played and shown on a large screen to the audience. I thought that it was interesting that the actors had to memorize the moves of the matches. I enjoyed that they played chess dramatically with sweeping motions, and in the finale Kasparov plays a move so violently that it blasts Deep Blue’s operator out of his seat.
The play was at the Park Avenue Armory, a beautiful space. Apparently New York City at one time needed an armory there; these days the Upper East Side does not seem like a place to expect an armory.
