They arranged for us all to tour some part of CERN on 19 June. My tour was of the facility in which they test the tunnels which comprise the 27km circular track in which the experiments are conducted.
I have no idea what could be so important in my life that I do not have time to collect my thoughts about CERN but it seems that I am in this position now. Going to CERN was a spiritual experience for me and I remember so much about it but am feeling unable at this time to put my thoughts to words. I have more insight to what they do.
To share one thing briefly, here is the mission of CERN –
- Do fundamental science research, including answering questions with no expectation of a practical application
- Do the engineering necessary to do that science research
- Foster an international science community within CERN
- Keep young people at CERN
I see these as high ideals and if CERN is actually striving for these things then it seems like a humanitarian organization to me. I should say more another time.
