I went to the Friends of Seattle Public Library Book Sale this last weekend. This is a fundraising book sale that happens twice a year at the Hangar in Magnuson Park on Sand Point Way in Seattle. They sell books donated to the library and also library books which are being removed from the library’s permanent collection, and almost every book they have goes for $1 on Saturday and then half price on Sunday. I bought about 60 books, with about 50 of those being on Sunday.
I enjoy almost everything that Dorling Kindersley published, but their Eyewitness Series has been tremendously influential on my life. It is a great pleasure for me to be able to afford these high-quality books, and it is even more motivating for me to seek these out when I know that I can mail them to India for the purpose of developing training materials there for basic research. Their books, usually written as primers on scientific and social issues, are so far beyond their competition that they really should be a primary source of information when any book of theirs is available for any beginning researcher’s field of interest.
I also collect the Opposing Viewpoints books published by Greenhaven Press because I like having concise presentations of opposing argumentative essays on various topics, and as anthologies, these are better edited than anything else I have seen.
Thanks to Rick Steves for always donating his surplus travel guides to this book sale! I see new boxes of his books at every sale.
