Great question. I have a bias for rodents and also a bias for parents who want to rescue their babies.

I would feel sorry for a baby crow but would not have the personal time to raise it, and I think there is no chance of a parent crow flying down to pick up the baby and return it to the nest.

Now that I think about it, it seems that part of my "heroics" was in knowing that I could make a small effort to enable another party (the squirrel parent) to do lots of work to save their own child. I am not sure I would have been the hero to actually raise a wild animal baby.

Hi Lane:

How I found your Web site and "computer help needed" items:

Met Nadya Kadrevis at a raw food meetup last Saturday.
Checked out her Kickstarter project.
You were listed as a supporter.
Thought, "Hmm, who is this Lane person, a fruit or a rude noise?"
(You don't need to answer that question.)
Because _I_ needed to answer that question, I read around and came upon your computer questions and thought "here are two questions I could answer."

= 1) Labeling Points on Vector Map

Easiest way:
Use a dingbat font character as a marker.

More complex ways depend on what program you use.

= 2) Subtitling Video

This depends on which DVD authoring program you use.

I use Sony DVD Architect (on IBMs not Apples), which allows placing a list of subtitles and then carefully spacing them for accurate playback when the remote's "subtitle" button has been turned on.

Here is a tutorial:
"Giving the viewer control in DVD Architect" by Gary Rebholz
    http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/giving_the_viewer_control_in_dvd_architect

Here is a tip for correct formatting a text file to import properly into DVD Architect:
    http://forum.videohelp.com/threads/287005-DVD-Architect-Subtitle-Questions-%28Problem-solved%29

Good luck.

I organize events (corporate conferences), too, and nothing is free. Insurance, equipment rentals, staff time (volunteers are awesome, but you can't run a large-scale event with volunteers only or it will not be a safe event), catering, food (TONS of it on this ride - and all really good), city fees for using the streets (called permits - for real!).

It costs a lot to use a facility like Magnuson.

You have to rent those porta potties, too. Or do you like making your business on the side of the road? gross.

All that equipment has to go in a truck, and most companies don't own a truck that large so you have to rent one.
From what I saw, the company that did this event does other events, so (based on my experience at work) I can only imagine they're rather efficient at what they do and they use their resources wisely. Events are too complex to do them any other way.

There isn't much money to be made in events after you pay for all of those expenses (permits are a real bummer and there are very few opportunities for free space use - partly because of the economy but also insurance liability), but I applaud the people who put them together for my enjoyment because they're a TON of work. Those people are up at 4am and not done until every table is put away, even if that's 10pm. My friend works at Magnuson Park and said that in 2009 they were there until dark with the clean up from the messes I helped make as a rider! I didn't ride in 2008, but I rode 2009 and 2010 and plan to go back next year. It's so well supported and I really dig that in a ride.

I'm so glad that you decided to bring this little guy home with you. I'm sure he was pretty scared about being outside, and chances are, had you not found him, he would not have survived for very long.

I do have a suggestion for you in regards to finding him a home. There is a big rat mailing list on Yahoo Groups, http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/RATS-AS-PETS2/ where I'm sure you could find him a wonderful new forever home. If you are not interested in joining the group, I would be more than happy to help you out by posting, since I'm already a member.

Thank you so much for saving this little rat! Please don't hesitate to let me know if I can help. I'll check back here for any replies in case I don't get an email notification.
